Post No 2207 ---JOURNALS for froebelsternchen

I  made three new journals for me. I will take the opportunity of TSFT to show them to you. So if you are interested grab your cuppa and have a look.

I am quite happy with my three new friends - ready to get filled.

The first one is a neutral Journal - I sewed a cover and bound
watercolour- and  mixed media paper in it.

Having flaps to put material in it is something that I love.

Even on the back I have space to store scraps or images.

I took  neutral fabric to be able to  paint it in the process of work or after it is completely filled. Or it gets it's own organic patterns and colours  during I work in it.

This one is made with coptic stitch and is filled with old
book pages.

I even reinforced every single spread with masking tape.

The covers are made of collaged canvas. A collaged and painted canvas  I started once and didn't finish ever. I cut the canvas away from the wood and this came handy and is sturdy enough to use as covers.

I will link this cover - I added a digital quote to it - to
Elke's LANDSCAPES OF THE SOUL over at

This kind of binding is nice since the pages lie flat and this is nice when working in the journal.

The third one is my favourite- I call it a
deconstructed and reconstructed
Altered Book Journal .
"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (in German)

All pages are sturdy - two pages at a time sewn together and
pre- gessoed - isn't that nice?! And 4 signatures sewn into the cover with a five - hole pamphlet stitch.

I used the old book cover just painted randomly with white gesso  to sew the signatures  in - the inside of the cover is covered with a napkin .

Thank you for reading and watching all that!
Happy T-Day!

  12. How exciting! I do love the ones that have pages that lie flat. I'm not sure how I could work with it otherwise. Those covers are very attractive

  13. I am in LOVE with all these journals. I simply don't hand sew, so these with their binding stitches make it so enjoyable to view.

I never thought of reinforcing pages using masking tape, but I like the idea. and of course, I adore the German text. It has such a beautiful font you only find in German books.

Thanks for sharing these three books, your tips, how you made them, and of course, your allowing us to choose between coffee and tea for T this Tuesday.

  19. Wowwwww, wie toll ist das denn wieder?!
Überhaupt hast du in letzter Zeit tolle Seiten hier gezeigt.

  31. Oh these three journals must be very excited at the thought of being filled up by Susi! They are waiting patiently for the first paint.
I think I like the coptic one the best with the gorgeous painted covers, and how interesting that it is filled with old book pages, I don't think I have seen this done with coptic binding before.

  34. Your journals look fabulous - I bet you can't wait to get started filling them, and I look forward to seeing what you do in them! I really like the idea of stitching two pages together - I usually just glue them, but stitching adds a nice touch, so I will definitely try that!

  37. oh it looks like I missed this post in 2017 - so I am happy I got to see it at last Susi - especially as I understanding bookmaking a bit better now that I've been trying this year. I love the coptic stitched books as they lie so flat - I had to watch a YT video over and over to do when stitching and I will probably have to do the same for the next book as I've forgotten how to do it ha ha ;)
But I love each one of the journals you made - each so unique, beauiful and so satisfying that they are hand made.
Happy New Week my friend xx
